Feeding: What to Expect
Feeding your newborn—whether by breast, bottle, or a combination—is a central part of those first few weeks.
- Breastfeeding: Some babies latch immediately, while others take time. Don’t hesitate to seek support from lactation consultants or support groups.
- Formula Feeding: Modern formulas are designed to give babies all the nutrition they need. Follow instructions carefully and keep bottles sanitized.
- Frequency: Newborns typically eat every 2–3 hours, which means a lot of time spent feeding in the beginning. Remember: this is a chance to bond.
Sibling and Pet Adjustments
If you have older children or pets, they’ll need time to adjust to the new family member.
- Involve Siblings: Let older children help with small tasks, like bringing diapers or singing lullabies. This makes them feel included rather than left out.
- Prepare Pets: Give pets space and time to get used to baby sounds and smells. Always supervise interactions between pets and your newborn.
